About Us
Not Backwards. Just Different.
The Backwards Backpack was founded in 2024 by Shelby County parents Aaron and Ashlea Garofola after experiencing firsthand how overwhelming emergency situations can be for children with autism and sensory needs.

Our Story
As parents of two boys on the autism spectrum, including one with significant support needs, they understand that moments of crisis require more than a quick response- they require understanding, preparation, and the right tools.
From these experiences, the Backwards Backpack was created with a simple but powerful mission: to equip first responders with sensory support resources that help bring comfort, reduce stress, and create safer interactions during emergencies.
By providing specially designed sensory backpacks and increasing awareness of the unique needs of children with autism, The Backwards Backpack helps first responders better serve families when they need support most.
At the heart of everything we do is the belief that every child deserves to be seen, understood, and supported. Our motto, "Not backwards. Just different", reflects our commitment to celebrating neurodiversity while creating safer, more compassionate experiences for children and families in times of need.
