Our Work

We work alongside local organizations to support children and families through meaningful community initiatives. From providing sensory backpacks to promoting education and awareness about autism, our goal is to meet real needs and bring comfort, dignity, and care where it's needed most.

Sensory Support Backpacks

Our backpacks are filled with carefully selected sensory tools and comfort items designed to help children regulate emotions and reduce stress. Each backpack is created with the goal of providing comfort during challenging situations.

First Responder Partnerships

We partner with fire departments, EMS agencies, and law enforcement organizations to provide sensory support resources for children with autism and sensory needs. These partnerships help first responders create calmer, safer interactions during emergencies.

Family Support

Families of children with autism often face unique challenges, especially during unexpected situations. Our mission is to provide resources and support that help children and their caregivers feel understood and prepared.

Our Impact

Through partnerships with first responders and community organizations, sensory support backpacks are delivered directly to local communities across Kentucky. From Shelby County and Henry County to Oldham County and beyond, we are working to make autism-friendly resources more accessible for families.

Our Impact In Action

Every backpack, partnership, outreach event, and family resource we provide is part of a larger mission: ensuring that children with autism and their families feel supported, understood, and connected. Through collaboration with first responders, community organizations, schools, and local families, The Backwards Backpack is working to build a more inclusive and autism-friendly community. Together, we are creating opportunities, raising awareness, and making a lasting difference- one family at a time.

ABOUT US

The Backwards Backpack was founded in 2024 by Shelby County parents Aaron and Ashlea Garofola after experiencing firsthand how overwhelming emergency situations can be for children with autism and sensory needs.

As parents of two boys on the spectrum, including one who is severely autistic, we know that moments of crisis require more than quick response. They require understanding, preparation and the right tools.

From those experiences, The Backwards Backpack was created to equip first responders with sensory support tools that help bring calm during emergencies and protect children when they need it most.
