The Backwards Backpack is incredibly grateful for moments like this, especially as we reflect on Autism Acceptance Day. This donation carries even deeper meaning for our team and community.

We extend our sincere thanks to Debbie Holloway for making the introduction, and to Jessica Forrester and her family for traveling during their spring break to personally present this generous gift. Their time, effort, and thoughtfulness speak volumes about their commitment to supporting children and families on the autism spectrum.

This day holds special significance for both of our families as parents of children on the spectrum, making this contribution even more personal and impactful.

We are also deeply thankful to Fiv Realty for believing in our mission and continuing to support our work. Partnerships like these allow us to bring comfort, resources, and sensory support to children and families when they need it most.

The Backwards Backpack is incredibly grateful to Kroger and the many generous customers who chose to support our mission through their donations. Their kindness and commitment to giving back helped us kick off Autism Awareness Month in a meaningful way.

Every contribution helps us continue providing sensory support backpacks to first responders, families, and community partners, ensuring that children with autism and sensory sensitivities have access to resources when they need them most.

We are thankful for the support of businesses and community members who believe in our mission and help us expand our impact. Together, we are creating more understanding, inclusion, and support for children and families throughout our communities.

The Backwards Backpack is proud to announce that two additional sensory support backpacks are now in service with the Waddy Fire Department. These backpacks are designed to help first responders provide comfort, support, and sensory-friendly resources to children during emergency situations.

We are grateful to Fire Chief James Riddle for partnering with us and embracing this initiative to better serve children and families in the community. By equipping emergency personnel with sensory support tools, we can help create calmer and more positive experiences during challenging moments.

This milestone was made possible through the generosity of Tim and Kayla Wiley, whose sponsorship provided both backpacks. Their continued support and dedication to our mission have played an important role in helping us expand our impact and reach more families throughout our region.

ABOUT US

The Backwards Backpack was founded in 2024 by Shelby County parents Aaron and Ashlea Garofola after experiencing firsthand how overwhelming emergency situations can be for children with autism and sensory needs.

As parents of two boys on the spectrum, including one who is severely autistic, we know that moments of crisis require more than quick response. They require understanding, preparation and the right tools.

From those experiences, The Backwards Backpack was created to equip first responders with sensory support tools that help bring calm during emergencies and protect children when they need it most.
